Our History
Mitchell Memorial Park has served the Hammond community since its original construction with funding from a partnership between Tangipahoa Parish and the State of Louisiana. Located at 44101 Millie Rd, the park provided a vital recreational space until it was severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. Because the park was no longer funded by an active agency, it was never restored following the storm.
The initiative began when HARD #1 leadership recognized the great need for positive recreational opportunities for the neighborhood's youth. HARD #1 entered into a cooperative endeavor with the parish to restore the park and launched the "If they can’t come to us … we will go to them" initiative. By partnering with Southeastern Louisiana University's sports management students, HARD #1 began cleaning up and refurbishing the grounds and existing structures to bring high-quality sports programs and facilities directly to the community. This restoration mission was fueled by the passion to empower youth, strengthen families, and create a positive pathway for over 1,350 local children.
