Hammond, LA – December 12, 2024 – Hammond Area Recreation District No. 1 (H.A.R.D. #1) is excited to announce several transformative projects currently underway to enhance facilities and programs at Chappapeela Sports Park. These upgrades reflect our commitment to serving the community, supporting youth sports, and positioning Chappapeela Sports Park as a premier destination for local and regional tournaments.

Ongoing and Upcoming Projects

Installation of LED Lighting on Universal Fields 1-4 and Baseball Field 16

We’ve partnered with Musco Lighting to install energy-efficient LED lighting on multiple fields, enhancing visibility and creating better playing conditions. This project will reduce our energy costs and extend practice and tournament hours, enabling more teams to utilize the fields year-round.

Turfing Infields on Baseball Fields 7-14

Starting in November, infields on baseball fields 7-14 will be upgraded to synthetic turf, with project completion anticipated in early spring 2025. Turfing the fields will reduce game cancellations caused by rain, ensuring more consistent play throughout the season. The all-weather surface will provide optimal conditions for athletes while decreasing maintenance time and costs.

Groundbreaking of New Gym Facility

We are thrilled to announce that plans for a new state-of-the-art gym are underway, with an anticipated opening by the summer of 2026. This multi-use facility will support various indoor activities, including basketball, volleyball, and fitness programs. It will also provide a space for community events, expanding the park’s ability to host year-round activities.

Positive Impact on Local Youth Programs and the Economy

These improvements are designed to benefit the youth of our community by providing better facilities, minimizing disruptions, and increasing opportunities for athletes to develop their skills. Fewer rainouts and extended playing hours mean our youth programs can operate more efficiently, creating a more enjoyable experience for players and their families.

In addition to allowing us to better serve our local athletes, these upgrades will attract more regional and national tournaments, bringing more teams, spectators, and visitors to Hammond.
